PennHip Evaluations

Based on the advice of our vet, we have made the decision to use PennHip [a form of evaluation developed by professionals at Penn State University] for our stud dogs in evaluating their hips for dysplasia and degenerate joint desease. The reason is that, while OFA is very subjective - three people look one set of x-rays from one angle and take a vote- the PennHip results are completely objective.

The PennHip process, which is also performed at Penn State University] is to measure the distance [using 3 different x-rays from 3 different angles] between the ball of leg bone from the interior of the hip socket. A measurement of .3 or lower is considered excellent, anything above .7 not so good and the average for Labradors is .48.
